Toric Lens

Lens replacement is the name given to the treatment in which the clear natural lens inside the eye is replaced with an artificial lens to correct the defects in the eye. The treatment, which is almost the same as cataract surgery, is recommended in cases where laser treatment is not sufficient to correct problems such as farsightedness, nearsightedness or astigmatism. It is known that it is better for people over 40 years of age to have it done unless it is compulsory, but people under the age of 40 can also have it done if it is compulsory. For lens replacement surgery, there are also types of lenses to be fitted depending on the problems in the eye.

Similar to the monofocal lens, the toric lens also focuses on only one problem, but this time that problem is astigmatism. Along with new technological developments, it is aimed to correct astigmatism during cataract surgery. Toric lenses are lenses placed inside the eye produced with high technology for the purpose of correcting astigmatism.

However, astigmatism can appear in the eye in two ways. One of them is astigmatism seen in the cornea and the other is astigmatism seen in the natural lens. If the patient’s astigmatism is related to the cornea, toric lens application is performed during cataract surgery.

Toric lenses are often needed during cataract surgery because 30% of patients with cataracts have astigmatism that needs to be corrected. With these toric lenses, quite successful results are obtained in the treatment of high astigmatism, and even can be corrected up to 6. However, as in other operations, good evaluation of the patient before toric lens treatment is quite important for the appropriate surgery type and appropriate lens selection. For this reason, intraocular examinations of the patient are performed before the operation. There are special dimensions for toric lens application and it is important to check whether the lenses are suitable for the patient.
